AMC Cancels 'Dietland'

Basic cable network AMC announced today that it has cancelled "Dietland" based on the Sarai Walker novel, after one season.

"'Dietland' is bold, original and brave. We are beyond proud of our partnership with Marti Noxon, [stars] Joy Nash, Juliana Margulies, [producers] Skydance and everyone else involved in bringing Sarai Walker's story to the screen," says AMC in a statement.

While "Dietland" was favored by critics and had a strong core following, the show did not earn enough ratings to merit a second season. It total, the show had less than 700K viewers all season long.

After the news broke, Walker addressed the cancellation on her Facebook page. "The show put a fat and fabulous heroine on TV, and held up a mirror to our misogynist culture in an unapologetic way," says Walker. "I’ve received so many messages from women who’ve told me the show has changed their lives, and how for the first time they’ve seen themselves represented on TV. Today, with news that Dietland is canceled, these women will be feeling the loss."
